Ask HN: Is it possible to build a physical viable “open source” product?

Hi Hners,

I've been asking myself for weeks, is it possible to build a product almost 100% open (software, electronics, CAO, etc.) and make a living with it.

I am an open source yellow belt developer (built django-adaptor) and it would be awesome to build my new project as a fully "open source" style device.

It would make it much more likely to succeed, more fun than to work on my own and would bring the price of the device down (so more people could benefit from it)

Have you seen such project already? How did it go?

For software, there is github.com or bitbucket.org, for electronics cards, there is website like fritzing.org, for CAD, there is grabcad.com. Is there other parts which can become open? (marketing website, designs, suppliers, etc.)

Would you be interested?

(Curious about the project: http://www.relinkdevice.com/)

Anthony
