Ask HN: Does commission based marketing actually work?

This is a question for any marketers out there. Would you ever consider a marketing position to promote a service based website, where your compensation was 100% of the money from every member that signed up as a result of your efforts, for a specific time frame?

I ask because it is difficult to determine whether a marketer will actually increase conversions, and a commission based payment can possibly provide incentive to a person who believes they can succeed in marketing a given product.

I'm curious if such a strategy would work, as it is relatively low risk for both parties. My particular site is a service paid by monthly membership fees, so I would be willing to give the payments up of the first month or two in hopes that customers would stick around for longer.

I'd be interested to know if anyone had worked under such a scenario, or if there are practical reasons why it would not work.

The site in question is www.tracktacular.com
