Well, this will be a great improvement for America. We all need more centralization of media ownership by the oligarchs.

  • lenkite

The USA should formally change its name to CSA (Corporate States of America) or OSA (Oligarchy States of America). A product should advertise its functionality.

    • sheikhnbake

CSA is more fitting since that acronym was tried before and the corporate states of America will have a similar lifespan considering the direction the country is currently heading.

Or Oceania if it wants to get ahead of the curve.

There seems to be a lot of dishonesty in mainstream media in general, so personally I wouldn't mind a different perspective but the entire industry needs a reform.

      > a different perspective

The broad conclusion one reaches surveying the mainstream media and the alternative-facts media those rejecting the mainstream seem to find is that the former, despite its flaws, is far more a news source than the latter, which mostly tickles its users wants and insecurities.

        > the former, despite its flaws, is far more a news source than the latter

The difference between 50% truthiness and 75% truthiness is just not that important, especially when one manufactures consent for the other, and the missing 25% is the most important part.

          > difference between 50% truthiness and 75% truthiness is just not that important

It’s a 1% false-information rate versus 20 to 40% [1]. (You can identify someone consuming that stuff within a few minutes of conversation. They’re unusually correlated in their tells, given how seemingly diverse the number of providers are.)

          > the missing 25% is the most important part

Read real journalism from multiple countries. (Not the free propaganda stuff.)

Once someone is addicted to alternative news, I don’t think they can be recovered. But we can keep more folks from going down that path.

All of this is still going to be constricted by global capital interests.

            > Once someone is addicted to alternative news, I don’t think they can be recovered.

Same for the average imperialist liberal guzzling NYT as gospel.

              > All of this is still going to be constricted by global capital interests

BuzzFeed had a real journalistic outlet then. Even so, they have a reputation, that's why I cited two other sources.

              > Same for the average imperialist liberal guzzling NYT as gospel

Sure. Someone only reading the Times has a biased diet. Someone never reading it–or unable or unwilling to pay for information–and assuming monolithic "global capitalist interests" probably does too. Both are almost certainly unable to change their ways on their own, however, so I'm speaking to a broader audience here.

              • swed420

To me it seems more productive to acknowledge the shortcomings of triangulating whatever few modern media outlets are indeed worthwhile so that a widespread appetite for something better might pave the way for more of those to exist.

    • sbseitz

I'd love to see facts/truth. Musk ain't it.

    • jurgenburgen

Mainstream media is owned by the oligarchs. How does this increase perspectives?

    • watwut

What different perspective? They are already biased toward right wing, just not enough for siegh heiling Musk

sbseitz

CNN is already right wing propaganda... now it will be worse?

dead_hn_theory

> When the left-wing minions of CNN look up at the mega-bucks Lords of Skydance whose money keeps the troubled network’s parent company afloat, Elon Musk will be looking back down

Lmao, I suppose this is the article. I'll take it.

Discuss.

Washington Post moment, I'd expect. The information space around the next election will be crazy. State of emergency and president for life, anyone?

    • polotics

Not quite: in the timeline it's the next one that's for life, a neuralink-plugged CNN-says-he's-alive heir that will then be `alive` until humanity's extinction.

      just kidding

sheikhnbake

Leave it to Elon to spend a shit load on a business actively losing value.

  • Zigurd

How long does he get away with hiding his dead cows in herds of still living cows? SpaceX and Tesla have both been burdened with herds of dead cows without much of a dent in their ability to retain absurd valuations. It will be the case study of the century when it's finally in postmortem.

    • sheikhnbake

Probably until his favor with the executive branch comes to an end. Until that happens he'll keep getting federal/defense contracts and regulation won't be a concern.

      • Zigurd

That's normal. That's how defense contractors stay in business even when their products flop. There's something else going on with Elon. Can't put my finger on it, which is to say I don't understand investment bank fuckery well enough to identify who is levitating Elon's valuations.

    • tstrimple

There seems to be some fundamental thing in humans which makes a subset of them follow narcissists like messiahs. MAGA and Elon stans aren’t that far apart.
