If you move countries and/or you are multilingual, it can be extremely frustrating to use the web.

Some sites force a language based on your system default, others based on geoIP detection, others based on Accept headers, others on who knows what. Even if I speak multiple languages, it doesn t mean I speak then equally well and it's frustrating that there's not consistency here.

I'm not even getting into the parts of the web at think that USA (I mean the EEUU) is the whole world!

This is the most annoying, because even if I set my system default correctly, and my browser accept headers, and my preference on every website that asks, they will still use the language guessed according to my physical location, not the language I want.

Touches on a pet peeve re India: Selecting India locale changes ALL numbers to the lakhs/crores style separators (first separator is at the thousands' mark, then subsequent ones are just two decimal digits, not three: "4,567", but then "12,34,567", not "1,234,567")

Now the thing is, this convention is typically used in India for money, and possibly for stuff like population counts (though a lot of companies have converted to the western-style millions/billions seperators even for money) - but not in general for scientific/engineering stuff. One never says 1,23,456 kCal. But theres no way to define this in the locale.

So I end up just being on en-GB instead (en-US has that messed up mm-dd-yy thing, so is a nono).

In KDE you can set different regions for different types of settings (Settings -> Region & Language), so unlike in Gnome you can mix and match locales. E.g., Mine is set to the US for everything except "Time" which is set to Canada because I prefer using YYYY-MM-DD for the date but AM/PM for time.

I once mentioned "the odd-numbered days of the week", meaning Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, to some Catholic friends and was sharply reminded that the week begins on Sunday.

Which is why my locale is Ireland. (Denmark is my second choice )

Wouldn't it be great if we could unbundle these preferences and set them to whatever we want?
