Note that this "Project Bromo" is just a proposed merger of existing companies hence the anti-trust red tape.

It is almost caricatural that the EU's "response to SpaceX" should focus on admin and regulation (and to reduce competition) before actually building anything of value... or that they just even think that this might help.

The "response to SpaceX" part is just management trying to sell the project. Everyone knows this will be a bloated inefficient operation.

Europe has plenty of other more nimble alternatives emerging. Not that SpaceX care, they are removing themselves from the market entirely.

US protectionism: "This is a great example of capitalist dynamism, and a forward-thinking restructuring that accounts for future growth without jeopardizing federal mission demand."

EU protectionism: "What the fuck are they doing! They're undermining market economics by trying to protect their domestic interests! We will withdraw from EU sales if this continues (lie)."

You could AI generate these comments, and they would be indistinct from what HN's armchair economists write under their own volition.

My comment had nothing to do with protectionism or "undermining market economics" but hey, don't let that stop you...
