Same issue today? Been down for a few hours.

> We are currently dealing with residual hardware failures that are likely related to the damage suffered from the overheating incident last week. At the moment we are operating at a reduced capacity, while our engineers work to bring additional infrastructure online. We apologize for the unfortunate timing of this incident and any disruption or inconvenience this may have caused you. > Sep 01, 2026 - 16:42 CEST

Why does a cooling failure in one datacenter brick the entire ecosystem? Reliability 101 to have redundancy here I'd think...

  • cyberpunk

I have to admit, this one has pissed me right off. I build systems that survive datacentre failures all the fucking time, it's inexcusable that a single site going dark removes access to something I pay like 200 euro a year for.

    • jshandling

guess it's the same ol' reliability doesn't get prioritized until something like this happens story

      • abnercoimbre

Back online for me ~2 hours later. Jesus.

Just for anecdata: I'm using simplelogin to alias my emails and I can see there is a 20ish minute window between when Simplelogin receives an email, to when it finally shows up in my Proton inbox. Normally it's an inconsequential delay.

Not sure if that indicates how much of a backlog of emails Proton has because of this outage, or if the DR infra is just that much slower?

    > We are currently in the process of shifting traffic to our backups sites

    Manually?!

I guess multiple datacenter hosting and automatic switch over should be the resulting solution of this incident

https://status.proton.me/incidents/kzklhrdg6hxp for this particular incident.

I am curious how you found that URL? There is no link to it on their general status page.

    • ghastmaster

Found it. Click on "Global Outage" In the orange top bar. Hard to find when there are three different colors for hyperlinks on one page.

I can't access anything right now. Blocked from my files in Proton Drive. No emails. Nothing. Can't work at all.

I’m paying for Proton enterprise and it is not demonstrating any value over the major providers as of late.

How is it the browser extension doesn't have a local cache? It seems like basic functionality. I'm having to copy passwords by hand from the mobile app, which does have a local cache.

Anyway, it's a good reminder: self-host all the things!

  • bsoles

Mine does. I am able to login to the browser extension with my password and see all my passwords. I think there was a setting to enable local caching somewhere.

  • DavideNL

It does have a local cache. It's a setting by the way called "Pass offline mode - enabled."

    And it's enabled by default.

Last thing I saw before my Proton Mail stopped responding was the "how are we doing?" survey modal, which I dismissed because I just wanted to get to my email.

Hope it's nothing too bad.

A nice reminder to keep passwords offline.

Just as I was trying to get a 2fa email for a time-critical payment...
