axios.comI’m always skeptical when I see an emotion attributed to an entire political party or ‘CEOs’ (“panic”)
BuT they pushed the AI will destroy all jobs and possibly kill us all so hard -
I can’t imagine they wanted an outcome where they were incredibly politically toxic, but it’s like jumping off a cliff and being surprised when you start to fall?
They spent years acting in a way that 1000% predicted this outcome. In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have imagined this turning out well.
It also feels like this ship has sailed. What are they going to do, get the Rock and Taylor Swift shilling for datacenters?
And I don’t think Dario “the only solution is to cure cancer” Amodei is helping matters.
I know this is antithetical to everything Silicon Valley believes, but I think we as humans have forgotten how to dream small.
You've got to admit that the 2026 Republican party has a more top down command structure than any US party in living memory. If Trump makes a policy, or says something, that's the policy, that's the party line that virtually 100% of elected Republicans espouse, and a large percentage of Republican voters believe. There's none of the variation that Democrats display, there's no Republican AOC/Sanders, no Republican Fetterman, or Manchin or Sinema. There's not even a Bob Dole or John McCain who occasionally votes across the aisle.
It's not really the "Grand Old Party" any more once so many Republicans abandoned their traditions for Trump instead.
People shouldn't need to be reminded that Trump has always been the complete opposite of a lifelong Republican.

Legally and structurally, it still is the Republican party - there's been a continuity of people and institutions. The same people call themselves "Republicans" as have always called themselves that. Who am I to say they're not the same party as before?

I also think you've got it completely valid but to me there has been greater migration away from traditional conservative values among Republicans than there has been away from traditional liberal values among Democrats. Plus I'm so disappointed at the extremists all over the place who hate each other more than ever.
I'm old so I remember Reagan quite well and the "belt tightening of the '80's". And of course before during and after Clinton.
The two parties didn't hate each other that bad like they have gotten under Trump, they merely disagreed, sometimes massive disagreements at times but almost insignificant number of absolute haters compared to now from both parties. And now you've got Trump "squared". To the power of two :( There was insignificant hate from Obama, Hillary and Biden to compare in any way or scale.
If John McCain had lived and gotten elected things would not be as dismal, people should not deny this.
That was a War hero who fought and gave his all for the citizens of the USA, and Trump is just plain nothing like that and never has come close as a ridiculously fake conservative.
Even if Bernie got elected things wouldn't be so bad, this is Trump that has compromised what used to actually be "Grand".
Mandami would never had a chance in hell if it wasn't for Trump. New Yorkers have known Trump best since he was a young fake millionaire, until he got more recognition for being 100% bankruptcy-prone. Fake billionaire before finally raking it in after everybody he bankrupted in the 70's is dead & gone, while the whole rest of the USA is now headed for bankruptcy like never before? Now what?
It was so cool when you could live & prosper with either party in power if you played your cards right.
This is what people around the world are going to miss about the USA until Trump has been long gone.
The Republicans are going to have to purge the Trumpards to a good degree and realistically at least one of them is going to have to start "stabbing him in the back" sooner rather than later if one of them would rather be President than have Vance prevail for very long. The Democrats are not going away and now you've got Socialists and who knows what that never had a chance and how is this supposed to end?
One reason Trump is so embarrassing is because he is one of the furthest things from a lifelong Republican, that only had a chance because they didn't have a swinging dick who was worth a shit and neither did the Democrats.
And the Democrats are still supporting more unelectable candidates in a number of places like they're in lala land.
How sad is it when they're the only hope?
