Berger's short pieces are worth tracking down. He could write in a spare and direct way about people and the web of social relationships they occupied. Confabulations is a recent favourite of mine, but it might be an old man's book (I'm old and male and thus swimming in the water). Bento's Sketchbook is extremely odd (Berger is imagining what Spinosa's lost sketchbook might look like, and telling Spinosa's story at the same time).

I might buy this biography. Or I might keep my version of the story. I'll decide when I walk to the bookshop to have a look.
