Ask HN: New Reddit also requiring login?

5 points by 7402 · 6 comments · 1 min read

I've seen the discussion on HN about old reddit requiring login, but today I tried the current interface, and it seemed to require login after scrolling a bit. Do others see this? Is there an alternative?

I don’t know how they can be so heavy handed on accounts, when they are also so quick to ban people.

I accidentally left a browser window open and minimized, then logged into my VPN to do some other stuff. I restored by browser and when I saw Reddit there, I immediately closed the tab, so I didn’t interact while on the VPN. They banned me.

I think their goal is to make a site full of bots that give the illusion of activity.

I've been working on https://treehouse.net to hopefully grow into a reddit alternative, starting small with a select set of topics. Bootstrapping a social network is an uphill battle to be sure. But I want treehouse to be the ad-free, bot-free experience original reddit once was.

I like the tree branch metaphor.

It reminds me of a Polish reddit spinoff attempt called strims, where subs were streams - hence the localised name.

You might want to add a projects section. Both Metafilter and Hackernews have it.

As of today it won’t allow me to access my account at all or new Reddit in any form without providing age verification (face scan or gov ID). AI faces, video game create-a-character, and IDs off of Google all failed.

Strangely I can still access everything in incognito on old.reddit.com; but can’t login.

Think I’m done with them.
