In my personal history, no self-made backup tool has ever produced any good result in a failure.
It's a case of, if you haven't tried it, it doesn't work. And who tests their backup?
I guess the issue isn't that his backups “failed”, but that Mullenweg allegedly deleted evidences and lost devices on purpose.
