this version seems to be missing large sections compared to the other posted version, like how the mice throughly clean up the debris after the dog's entrance, the dog smelling food through the kitchen door and scratching at it, etc etc

    The original was published as a one page story. It was later reprinted in a longer format.

    It's set in November, not August, and another 27 years further in the future (at least the version currently linked to on the front page).
