This reminds me of I/O Channels on IBM Mainframes.

    Ye, all that pinning etc look like cpus are not so "general purpose" and we want specialized and programmable IO hardware. Maybe even IO from memory to memory :)

    Same as with paralleism - it's data type what matters.
