At the same time, I'd like to point out that HP seems to be making it a hell of a lot more obvious these days as to what you're getting into:

Every single HP printer I've seen at retail now has giant warnings across the box for dynamic cartridge security and the managed supplies printing contract on offer (aka Instant Ink). I also noticed their last packaging design didn't mention Instant Ink as prominently, but quite a few models have had a giant section on the box explaining that they now use dynamic security and that firmware updates will continue to maintain the effectiveness of their measures.
