The call is coming from inside the house. Anthropic and OpenAI built their AI hype machines too fast and now are desperate to prevent price competition driving the value to $0.
AI is going to be ubiquitous like the spellcheck running in my browser and at or slightly above the cost of electricity to run the models.
What if a US Company takes a Chinese AI open model, makes some minimal changes in it (e.g. when you ask it who are you :p ) and then hosts it as their own open model. Without any financial transaction (due to entity list restrictions).
Will they also try to ban that?
I think the ultimate goal here is to protect the valuations of Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI etc. so probably?
The challenge that the Trump administration faces is that any regulatory action to prop up the domestic AI companies will put the rest of the tech sector at a disadvantage compared to its foreign competition because they'll have to pay 10-50x more than the rest of the world for tokens.
