Show HN: Submarius – Global water clarity for divers
submarius.comSubmarius started as just a dashboard for diving conditions, but I quickly realized that there is simply no API for water clarity, nor even a simple way to calculate it. Divers call it viz, and it is one of the most consequential factors for a diving experience. So I dove the viz rabbit-hole. I landed on a state-augmented ensemble kalman filter. More details on the /clarity page. My question for the HN audience is if anyone knows of a better way of doing this? There is a ton of satellite data to train on, but a lot of it is messy (clouds read as turbid water, shallow reefs reflect abnormally causing bad readings, etc). Appreciate any feedback on the subject. Enjoy the read! As a diver, I'd love to use this and show my friends, but it's a bit hard to get to actual results for a location. Particularly for sharing, if the URL changed to something like `/diving/location/{lat},{lng}`, it would be helpful so I can drop a link in a group chat for "here's the conditions we'll be seeing later". Oh good feedback! I can add deep links. Currently there is a share button on the verdict card (big number at the top of the app landing page). I know its small, but it generates an OG image for sharing for a specific location :) "Not another dashboard for every activity on the water" means has about 8 identified activities and tunes the dashboard, in fact IS another dashboard for every activity. (not mine: has sailing, not rowing) Thanks for the feedback, that verbiage was unclear. You are right that it is a dashboard for every activity. Fixed the wording is every webpage now just going to be this slop layout and text. i'm so tired of "A thing, not a thing" and a glob of emdashes emdashes purged, and "a thing, not a thing" wording removed. Thanks for the feedback
