Ask HN: Would you use a verified social platform?

5 points by jacobwiseberg 2 months ago · 7 comments · 1 min read

In the sense that you identity is verified by a third party and all posts/comments must be in your full legal name. This would be true for everyone else on the platform as well.

I just listened to the most recent episode of Lemonade Stand and Atrioc was actively asking for someone to build a platform like this.

God no! Who could you trust with such a job? Any credentials you gave them would inevitably be leaked.

I absolutely would not. I know probably one person who would find it an improvement, and everyone else I know would avoid it completely.

Would you use a verified social platform?

Nope. I will not use any social media platforms. The closest I will ever get is this site and even this one edges close to my limits.

I know Atrioc but from a privacy standpoint, this is such a large nightmare and I personally wouldn't trust anyone.

I think that open web/indexes are interesting, a recent index for example like I was just browsing some indexes from https://theindex.fyi/ themselves and I can also add my websites inside of these.

Combined with hackernews, discord and perhaps Youtube and some other forums, I feel like its a much healthier way than requiring verified social platform.

Also, twitter used to be actually verified and that sign was a checkmark of verification but then they later cranked it up so that anyone can buy that checkmark and now we see slop accounts with checkmarks from my understanding on that website.

I think that perhaps something similar might happen to this idea that you mention.

The renewed friendster.com is another very interesting thing that I am keeping a very albeit distant eyes on it and I am interested in the ideas relating to what friendster is doing.

There is also spacehey which I find interesting which is a myspace alternative.

Absolutely not. The risks are just too high to tolerate.

No. Verified identity is not the problem I worry about.

Why should we identify ourselves with our first and last name etc on platforms where the ‘content’ is AI-produced slop coming from nameless actors?
