This is apparently an issue in US made tasers & bodycams from Axon, which is the supplier to basically every police department in the US. So, I'm assuming they would have the same ability to be detected?

The man, who doesn't want to be named, showed Four Corners how he built his own proof-of-concept software, and is able to locate and track officers by the fixed, public MAC address assigned to any Axon bluetooth-enabled device.

The vulnerability is already being exploited overseas.

Border Patrol agents in the United States were reportedly told to stop using Axon body-worn cameras in the field last year after potential security risks with the devices were identified and an investigation launched.

Other hackers have shared instructional tutorials online.

"This is like quite an open secret," the man said.

This reminds me of how RFID passports are 24/7 broadcasting the nationality of their holder. Back in the mid-2000s, I remember a proof-of-concept which only detonated a bomb if a USA passport passed within 20ft of it.

Scary stuff. I sure wouldn't want to be walking around with a high-targetable beacon[†] #ACAB
