Ask HN: Did anyone else get logged out from HN today?
I opened Hacker News on my phone this morning and saw that I had been signed out. I chalked that up to a transitory one-off thing, especially since I’ve been tinkering with the browser on my phone these last few days. No other sites were affected, though.
I just grabbed my tablet and opened HN. I was logged out too! I have never seen this happen on this site, and I find it curious that both devices weee affected on the same day.
Has this happened to anyone else today? Logging out of HN logs you out of every device. I figure they hold some session data server-side that is deleted, so your other sessions are invalidated. Not sure why this is a worth a post; who cares in the grand, medium and small scale of things. I didn’t know that, thanks for letting me know. I don’t think I logged out, unless maybe I accidentally triggered that in my pocket. I figured it was worth posting because I get relatively uneasy when unexpected things happen, and if others were also affected then I could just justify it to myself as a server side thing. In fact, what you just told me about logout being global is already very helpful, so I guess it wasn’t for naught. :) No Yes I did - had to log in again to comment, thought it was a little odd, but eh, I see that the user cookie is only set for a year. I hadn’t checked how long the cookie is set for yet. But since I got logged out from both devices on the same day, I figured it can’t be that. I haven’t had this tablet for too long, and I think I must have signed in just 2-3 months ago. Thanks for your response! Do statistics exist about active users? Did anyone else get logged out from HN today? Nope. Same cookie from a few days ago. Yes, I cleared cookies and history on Firefox. I didn't know it was contagious! Sorry! /s
