Ask HN: How long before Agents/LLMs can replicate a (simple) videogame?

I'm thinking of these games that old farts like me played when we were younger - strategy like Master of Magic, Master of Orion, Railroad Tycoon, Civilization, etc.

I implemented a game and shipped into app store. It was a simpler game unlike the titles you mentioned.

It was more arcadish, retro vibe games.

It is extremely easy to do, since LLMs can write everything in godot and godot template files too. It includes UI too.

Limiting factor is person's ability to test and manage complexity as it grows.

I think of Asteroids or Space Invaders as simple. See https://www.theguardian.com/games/2025/mar/11/ai-pac-man-clo...

Civilization certainly isn't. Think of how many things have to fit together and be balanced. I can picture an A.I. slop version of Master of Magic which looks similar at a screen-by-screen level but having it really play like a game is another thing.

I can see A.I. coding being helpful to make that kind of game but to just make a prompt and get that kind of gamer is delusional.

I would be surprised if we were not already close with Railroad Tycoon. Admittedly have not played the others.
