Ask HN: Why do we need things like 8sleep? Is sleeping with blankets unnatural?
Basically what the title says. How come people need this? Our ancestores have been sleeping perfectly fine on hay and grass Bugs? Try removing bugs from a pile of hay. In particular, here in Argentina in some areas this is common https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagas_disease One of the problems with the homes of poor people is that the walls are not "nice" and have little holes where the bugs can hide. (In my home, I notice that white walls make mosquitoes easier to spot and kill with an electrical fly swatter.) (I just searched 8sleep. It looks too fancy, expensive and probably the improvement is minimal.) Bi-phasic sleep was once very common but today's "normal" is thought to be a single uninterrupted block of sleep. It's not to say that either (or indeed any other) approach is "normal" or "better" – just a recognition that human sleep patterns have a very diverse history. We don’t need them. Marketing departments want you to think you need them. Don’t be a chump easily persuaded by marketing departments. Do you yourself sleep on hay and grass?
Our ancestors also had very different environmental influences. Artificial light distorts our circadian rhythm and hormones. Stimulants such as caffeine also influence our sleep patterns. > Our ancestores have been sleeping perfectly fine on hay and grass
