Show HN: Lingoku – Learn Japanese with DeepSeek/Ollama (Updated)

3 points by englishcat a month ago · 1 comment · 1 min read

Hi HN,

A few weeks ago, I shared the first version of Lingoku here [1]. The community gave me some critical feedback: you wanted more privacy, local model support.

I listened. Today’s update addresses the top requests from that discussion:

   1. No Login/Registration: You can now install the extension and use all features immediately. No account needed.

   2. Bring Your Own Key (BYOK): I've decoupled the AI. You are no longer locked into a default provider.

   3. Local & Global Model Support: We now support 8 providers:

      - Ollama (for local privacy)
      - DeepSeek (great logic/price performance)
      - OpenAI / Claude / Gemini / OpenRouter
      - Doubao / Kimi
The tool focuses on contextual word injection and vocabulary explanations by AI while you read or watch content.

Try it here: https://lingoku.ai/en/learn-japanese

We also support real-time word injection of video subtitles for platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, and Bilibili.
