Show HN: I made a fireplace for your wrist (and widgets)

22 points by kingofspain a month ago · 20 comments · 1 min read

I was bored and cold so I made a simple fireplace app to keep your icons and wrist warm this coming winter. Relax in front of a comforting pixelated fire! It's for iOS.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fireplace-for-your-phone/id675...

Features:

- Widget in varying sizes to enjoy a warming fireplace on your phone - Companion watch app to enjoy a mini fireplace wherever you go - Various customisation options for flames and colours (small unlock IAP)

There are no subscriptions, just like a real fireplace (I assume, who know these days)

You could make a version for Android that uses as much processor as possible to heat up the device, and especially Galaxy devices, to actually warm the users' hands.

Weird, I posted this last week and it got a couple of views but I assumed just wasn’t popular enough and now it’s back?!

Anyway I’ve made a few little updates since this, the main one being you can share fireplaces with friends and enemies (both static and animated).

Thanks for checking it out!

Sorry, I don't have an iDevice, so I'll have to take comfort in keeping my terminal warm instead.

Perfect timing, I was looking for something to keep my apps warm this winter since they're not fond of the iPod Socks I've been using (too itchy).

For people looking for desktop or TV versions, I can also recommend:

Make it mine crypto to actually generate heat.

Great app.

And wow, Apple has really nailed their ecosystem. Took me 3-4 secs to install on my phone, for it to also appear on my watch in all its fiery glory.

I wish there was no tracking. I don't want to be tracked because I installed a looping animation.

looks cool, are you planning an Android version? what was the biggest challenge in making this?

Hadn’t really thought about it tbh, maybe. Depends how fussy Android widgets and the watch stuff (which is the challenge. iOS widgets are a pain and doing any dev pairing with Xcode and a watch… lets just say I’m glad it’s all on fire…)

I had a similar situation with one of my apps. I decided not to; Android ecosystem is a bit horrible as a developer, and also Play Store users don't tend to pay for apps. Since then, Google has cleaned up the Play Store a bit so maybe things are different now but still... nothing eats the dev ecosystem for building iOS, WatchOS etc apps.

well, logs are an irl subscription

In both cases you pay for the energy used, it's just that there are many more steps to get that energy to your watch!
