Without the surveillance, cross-site tracking, algorithmic feed addiction, and profiling for sales of users brains to advertisers, one wonders just how small a server complement is actually required to run a (really) social site. I am reminded that Craig’s List started out as an email list, run on a server in Craig Newmark’s closet.

Are Mastodon and Bluesky untainted by the above? Hacker News? :-)
