Looking at the years involved, this was before widespread adoption of digital photography. The explanation hints at the use of film, but doesn't go into detail. The colors are reminiscent of film. It's pretty fascinating to me. Only the task of managing this many rolls, negatives, prints, scans, etc. sounds like a lot to me.
