Show HN: Reveal-App: AI Summarization of latest news
Hello Hacker News Community, I have created a website/application for aggregation and summarization of the latest news articles (https://reveal-app.net). How it works: It is a simple concept really. The backend grabs the news content (uses RSS) and then passes it through an LLM to create a summary of the news. The front end web app allows viewing the summaries. It’s built using NodeJS / NestJS for backend, Angular for the frontend. It’s hosted using Firebase and GCP, and uses Gemini Vertex AI for the LLM.
Why I built it: Basically today there is just so much information, It’s hard to keep up. Many reputable news publications are now behind paywalls. It’s impractical to have news subscriptions to multiple publications. And news publications always seem to have a particular viewpoint. So it is difficult to get different viewpoints. And even If you really make an effort to go to different news sites, the whole ecosystem of online advertising and tracking makes the experience highly unsatisfactory (to me atleast). So I built this application to summarize the latest news from a variety of sources. You can read the summary and then decide if it's worth your time to go to the original article. So hopefully much fewer click baits. My target audience is folks who want to efficiently catch up with the latest goings on.
What I am looking for: Any feedback positive or negative. Any suggestions on how to increase awareness in a cost effective manner. If it is even worth trying to increase awareness too. Please let me know what you think.
– Jantric Good job! I like the idea, seems similar to Google News, but with summaries in addition to the headline. Personally, I would prefer no pictures, they seldom add anything meaningful to the summary. I would enjoy seeing the items grouped by topic as does Google News (or maybe a filter?).
I like the 'X' in the lower left corner to remove an item. Maybe it would be more consistent with general UI principles to place it in the upper right corner?
I'm not able to select any text, is that by design?
It wasn't obvious to me that I could click on the summary to expand the window. I discovered it by accident.
It would be really cool if the AI could replace clickbait titles like "This 1 eating habit puts you at risk ..." with "study: red meat increases dementia risk". Thanks for checking it out and the suggestions. I designed the UI To be more usable in a phone screen. Hence the buttons in the bottom. Also I have tried to make it stream like. So everything together and you can quickly close out the cards your'e done with. But definitely having categories is something I've thought about and may move to it. Hello, interesting app, i think i reported an article by mistake because i clicked on the i icon, thinking that it was some "info" button, maybe you could add a little tooltip or a confirmation popup just to avoid receiving random reports haha.
Also, maybe it could be cool to have the choice between a very short TLDR (like 2 sentences max) or the longer ones you provide here, depends on each person i guess but for me the summaries here are still a bit too long to read.
Would also be cool to have some filter buttons at the top, to only show tech, business, international, etc. Thanks for checking it out.
I made UI for the phone, so can't really put tooltips, but maybe I can add labels to make the usage more clear.I think shorter summaries is also a good suggestion
