The Product Engineer

This may be true, but it just means you are not a software engineer. Otherwise, where is the equivalent expansion of the roles for design and product? Are product and design accountable for the code? Of course not. The engineer role has been constantly expanding to basically encompass the entire SDLC from ideation to post-production analysis and decision making, and now it has expanded to be a product owner, and soon it will also be managers.
I get it though, software has become increasingly easy to write, and there usually is a combination of libraries that can be glued together that will do the job... and this is why software engineering is going away, at least for anything that is not a cutting edge, or a unique problem. There is no need to study design patterns, or programming paradigms unless you are solving something unique and novel.
