Is Netflix deliberately dumbing down TV so people can watch while scrolling?

I think this has more to do with the user option existing to simply or annotate the dialogue than rewriting the script. It's like GPT-summaries.

I am rather old. Could someone explain what the point of that is?
I have friends who can't even watch a movie without using their phone the whole time. I find it pathetic and childish, but it's also annoying because the only reason we're watching a movie together is for the shared experience.
