Ask HN: How do you break into tech at 40?
A close friend (now 40) has spent the last 2 years doing a series of courses and bootcamps to learn coding from scratch.
He would like to go into ML engineering. He's proficient in Go and Python, and so far has experience with basic ML python packages (pandas, scikit, etc) plus Metaflow. His largest obvious gap is deep learning, which he's currently trying to fill.
Prior to the career change, he built websites for former employers and served as non-technical cofounder of a bootstrapped startup.
He lives in Austin.
Now, what should he do to finish up his studies? How does he get his first job? How should he approach his first few years as a dev?
