Lilygo T-SIM module as a dumbphone?

1 points by lennart-rth · 2 comments · 1 min read

Has anyone tried or heard of building a custom dumbphone with a LilyGO T-SIM module? It seems like, aside from a battery, the hardware is mostly there. For the case, I’m thinking of something like an old Nokia 3310 shell.

My requirements are SMS, calls, and rudimentary access to WhatsApp or Signal (maybe via a custom hosted server offering API endpoints that the dumbphone could use).

Has anyone experimented with this or seen similar projects? It just seems to good to be true!

This made me curious so i poked around; their github issues has one where they state the sim module sim7000g doesn't support voice calling. The datasheet does list VoLTE, but its asterisked with a note saying "in planning"
