Ask HN: Advice for finding a good nanny?

Founder here with a working wife. US HCOL on East Coast. We have a 6 month old and maternity and paternity leave is over. We've heard that it's hard to find reliable, safe childcare for a baby much younger than 1 year. We don't have family nearby. But we're up for the challenge of finding a good nanny because we need help.

Any advice for finding a good nanny? Any stories to share from those who've tried?

What country & region?

Are public child care centers common, to inquire about (say) retired staff who'd be interested?

Are there trustworthy (to you) religious organizations, which might refer a nanny?

Are medical professionals paid poorly enough (compared to your budget) for you to hire a pediatric nurse?
