When Dark Mode for YN?

We're in 2024 guys, my eyes hurt.

I have been using Dark Reader for years and years. Sometimes I forget that some websites don't natively support dark mode until I accidentally turn it off for some reason.

I recommend setting it to disabled by default, and manually enable it for websites which need it using the "Invert listed only" button.

I used to be a big user of dark mode on every site that hd it available. Nowadays I just turn it off. I find it incredibly annoying and I’ve also realised that my eyes don’t hurt as much as I’ve read abou they should. I suppose YMMV

I use it at night on my phone and desktops. With dark reader to switch it. During the day I use normal mode. It really helps at night because displays these days can't get too dark anymore. They're optimised for peak brightness because high values sell betterbut low brightness gets neglected.

My 24" 4K display i use during the day with 0% brightness. Obviously at night this is too bright so i have to reduce the contrast which really hurts colour depth. Dark mode helps a lot then.

It's funny, at first I just thought it was me. But I took my old VT520 one time and I was really surprised how darkly it can paint a perfect screen. Even in a dark room I can set it so low I can barely read it.

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but you can use https://news.t0.vc/ to view HN in dark mode

Does anyone know if anything has ever been added since the days when Paul Graham ran this directly? They might be operating on strict orders to keep it the exact same? I know there was some wording changes to the rules a few years back, but I’m talking technical additions of any kind. Any old timers around?

HN's extremely poor usability, accessibility, and design are topics covered at length for years and years now. The catalog is filled with them. Search hn.algolia.com and you'll see.

They don't care; it's that simple.

I think it's perfect actually. I love the high-density interface and I wish more sites would have that.

For dark mode I just use dark reader.

Dunno if it's perfect but ironically, the minimalism is really nice compared to reddit's. New Reddit is obnoxious and Old Reddit's various elements eventually collapse on each other and make it an unreadable mess.

Well it depends strongly on the person. I'm sure many people would hate Hacker News' layout. But for me it is perfect. In fact I've built some custom CSS to replicate the same for other sites as well.

In your search, I'm sure you'll find that in every thread where such a claim is made, many of us reply that HN's design is excellent - a real breath of fresh air, compared to most of the modern web.

Plus all sorts of other things over the years.

Interesting, thanks! I’m a relative newcomer so I’m walking blind a bit. HN is certainly blazingly fast, I think we can all agree

Now, with uBlock Origin: https://www.naiyerasif.com/post/2023/07/15/hacker-news-dark-...

I have to second this. I use Noir on iOS, but everywhere else visiting HN in the evenings is a chore, especially if I need to comment.
