Netflix Won the Streaming Wars
ft.comAs a consumer, it doesn't feel over. It won't feel like it's over until these other streaming companies cut their losses and license content over to Netflix (or whoever "wins), so content isn't spread across a dozen different services.
> Netflix would start cracking down on customers who shared their passwords with friends or relatives, an idea he had opposed in the past.
I've been reading articles about this for a couple years it feels like. They've yet to crack down on me. Maybe the usage is low enough that they don't care. I looked at the activity and the person I'm sharing with hasn't used it since July, and before that it wasn't much; 20 minutes every couple days. It could be that Netflix has a rank ordered list by time watched, assuming that the big watchers are more likely to sign up, while the infrequent watchers would be more likely to simply watch nothing, and it would simply be bad PR. Crackdown on those likely to sign up, while leaving the others alone, moving down the list as more money is required. I only shared it after Hastings said people should, and I shared it with family that would never spend the money on it.
I'd be curious to know the real story, as it doesn't seem like the universal crackdown I was expecting.
