Small Data SF Conference

I was curious to know what was meant by "small data". From what I understand it goes something like: * most often, only recent data is useful, * single computers are enough to deal with the volumes of such recent data, * local development is better for this (since individual computers are 100 times more powerful than when "big data" hype/trend emerged).
I have two reads: one is that if you are doing information extraction with A.I. your bills are big so your data had better be small; if on the other hand “small” is supposed to be contrarian to “big” they could better represent contrarianism by having the conference in Wisconsin or the Research Triangle Park area or any place where you feel it’s safe to stay someplace other than the conference hotel.
