I don't get why HN commenters try to promote random tweets as original and label actual news stories dupes

Because a discussion has already started. Best practice is to post better links in the comments of the thread with the most established discussion and reach out to dang, if feeling it's important enough and request he update to the more substantive article.

HN has a number of standards for submissions. Some of those are in conflict. HN submitters are a diverse group, and may be unfamiliar with both site norms and of better submission references.

The first submission of a given story is generally selected as primary. Comments from subsequent posts are merged to the original submission.

Primary sources are also favoured over secondary. So a Twitter post which references another source (news report, blog post, official agency or organisational statement) should be replaced with that which it references.

(This can get a little complicated for, e.g., blog posts which substantially comment on and add to an initial news report.)

rawling is generally correct in noting that this submission is a dupe of the earlier Twitter thread. The argument that the Ars story would make for a superior submission also has merits.

In either case, the appropriate response is to email HN mods at hn@ycombinator.com to make suggested changes. Include the itemID(s) for the post(s) involved in the subject line of your email for faster response.

And it's not necessary to write an essay, just state the problem and your recommended resolution. Mods will frequently follow such guidance, all the more so if the problem and solution are both clearly stated.

In the case of Twitter, the increasing bars to being able to read full threads on that site make alternatives (referenced sources, Threadreader) arguably more appropriate for HN given another guideline: avoidance of paywalled / regwalled sites.

These and other issues are covered in the HN Guidelines (<https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html>), and many, many, many moderator comments, e.g.:

      - Original source: <https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...>

      - Earlier submission: <https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...>

      - Email mods: <https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...>
