Ask HN: How much would it cost to migrate Twitter to Cloudflare?

3 points by tuyuri a year ago · 7 comments · 1 min read

I'm from Brazil, and currently, our ISPs are dropping any requests for the Twitter IP range (AS13414 Twitter Inc.) and refusing DNS queries on their servers.

If a user is already using Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1), wouldn't moving Twitter to Cloudflare make the block unfeasible? What are the downsides from a business perspective to not migrating? How much would it cost to migrate Twitter to Cloudflare?

Edit: Yeah, they could just ask Cloudflare to block it, but what if Cloudflare refuses to do so?

If Cloudflare was proxying or hosting Twitter and refused to block Twitter in Brazil, then… couldn’t Brazil block Cloudflare?

Yep, but it would be too "expensive" to block ( a lot of big players rely on Cloudflare like discord, canva ... )

Given how anti free speech Cloudflare is I don't think it'd be wise for Twitter to migrate there

I don't understand your comment. Could you elaborate on why a company being anti free speech is an issue for Elon Musk's Twitter?

Can’t a VPN bypass the filters, as is done in China?

    Oh, absolutely.

That's why the judge-king preemptively threatened to fine anyone caught doing so 10kUSD/day.

He also ordered the VPNs themselves to prevent access to X. It's unclear to me whether he even has jurisdiction over them.

He might also have ordered the big techs to delete the VPN apps themselves from their app stores and even remotely from people's phones. Haven't confirmed this information yet but I wouldn't be surprised.
