The great thing about 'old' Star Trek was the characters written as highly functional adults who struggle when faced with extreme difficulties.

In modern Star Trek, the characters are presented as emotionally fragile with impulse control issues. They can't control themselves, lash out and do irrational decisions, but always survive due to magic of script writing.
