Ask HN: Why is somebody using an AI to talk to me on Facebook?

1 points by atsaloli 2 years ago · 2 comments · 3 min read

Transcript of chat (Facebook) with someone who cold messaged me pretending to be a young woman (https://lnkd.in/gdSxuj_J). AI-generated photos on profile (AI-generated because the right hand looks odd on some of the photos). Apparently chatbot on the other end but with a human in the loop? Why would somebody do that?

Chat transcript follows. I'm Aleksey, she's "Katerina".

Wed 3:14 AM

Katerina:

Hello Aleksey

Thu 12:05 PM

Aleksey:

We have 3 mutual friends on Facebook (REDACTED, REDACTED and REDACTED). Are they Facebook friends for you or do you know them in real life?

Fri 1:58 PM

Katerina:

Hope you had a beaut full morning!

Katerina replied

Great to hear that dear, I'am Katerina Zervas orginal from Athens, Greece

but i live in Miami.

Katerina replied

Fri 5:45 PM

Aleksey:

Okay I understand that my first name is Greek . Is that true? It’s a popular name in Russia.

Katrina:

Edited

Wow, that is a great observation! Many Greek names have been adopted by other cultures. I think Russia is one of them. The name may have a rich history with Greek origins, but it is also a beloved name in Russia and other countries."

[Notice the orphan end double quote. And the message was edited. I didn't see the original. --Aleksey]

Katerina:

How old is your daughter?

Aleksey:

What’s the greek version?

Katerina:

The Greek version of Katerina is Αικατερίνη (Aikaterini)

Do you speak Greek or have any favorite Greek traditions?

12:03 AM

Aleksey:

There is a rolling rain

[Intentional non-sequitur and nonsense to check if I am talking to an AI.]

Katerina:

Oh I love the smell of rain! It's like the earth is giving itself a big hug

Do you have a favorite thing to do when it's raining, For me, I like to listen to music.

Aleksey:

Wonderful! I like to fangle and to make staple soup.

Katerina:

Romance scams can go for months before they ask for money https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_scam

Real common, luckily my mom was smart but some dude talked to her for weeks about whatever while playing Scrabble on facebook, then started asking for Amazon gift cards, probably after a month or longer of semi-regular conversation.
