The new Framework Laptop 13 with Intel Core Ultra Series 1 CPUs
frame.workPerhaps the coolest part of this update is a new 2.8k 120hz screen.
This will be the first time I've upgraded a screen (myself) on my main laptop, although it ships in August.
I wonder if 120hz will drain the battery a lot faster as OEMs claim they do on smartphones, or if there's VRR support.
There is VRR support, but 2880x1920 is still pushing a lot of pixels!
Amazing, you should add this somewhere public, like on the product description!
I think this will make Linux (ecosystem) support for VRR better, as it will be another thing for relatively sophisticated Linux users to tinker with (which have a fair cross-section with framework laptop owners it feels like).
The timing's pretty good with Gnome (Mutter) releasing VRR hopefully in the next release? Some compositors have good support already too!
It's great that it's VRR. Also I don't think the rounded corners will matter much in practice, might even look cool if the bezels are designed for it!
Yep, you stop noticing the corners pretty quickly. We thought about introducing rounded bezels to match it, but didn't want to introduce bezel fragmentation.
Speaking of bezel hardware changes, people keep asking for the 13 to operate better while closed. I took a look inside my 13 and found that you could make a bezel with an indent or cutout on the hinge cover at the vent location and almost completely unblock the heatsink exhaust.
The only tradeoff I can think of besides inventory fragmentation would be appearance while open (no uniform bar the whole way across).
Not important for me personally, but it would make it a better option for those who use the laptop docked to a much larger screen perhaps with an eGPU.
I'm happy to answer any questions folks have about the new product and modules.
Either I'm going crazy or there's bug in the configuration wizard - I'm selecting 64GB of memory with Ultra 7 165H CPU DIY, but when I add it to the bag it says just 16GB.
Thanks for reporting this. The team is able to reproduce this and is working on fixing it now.
I just got a Framework 16 laptop and can't get it set up because it gives an error that the input module connector board is not detected. I already opened a ticket with support but haven't yet heard back.
The face plate for the touchpad isn't flush with the faceplate with the side panels, which is sort of annoying. It could be resolved by having the touchpad panel the full width of the laptop instead of having spacers. Will there be an option to do that in the future?
Our support team is usually able to respond within 24 hours on weekdays, but if you haven't received a reply in longer than that, check if the response went to spam. Please also let them know about the touchpad.
Could you share video samples from the new webcam?
We have a blog post coming up where we'll share more about the webcam and some captures from it.
Is the grey-to-grey response time information available? If not would it be possible to share the panel's serial code?
10% to 90% + 90% to 10% is 12ms.
The sum of the times is 12ms?
Yes, for whatever reason, the display industry has standardized on specifying rise+fall.
I don't have any questions but I do think it looks great and that Framework is doing interesting and important work.
It's amazing that you've been able to ride on the coattails of another manufacturer's tooling investment in the panels.
Can you share the data sheet for this new panel? The previous matte panel has a very bright minimum brightness of 21 nits. What is the minimum brightness of this new panel?
> It's amazing that you've been able to ride on the coattails of another manufacturer's tooling investment in the panels.
This is what almost everyone does for one part or another. Companies are just usually not so transparent about it.
Hello, what kind of RAM is supported for the Intel configuration?
I have a 32GB DDR4 SO DIMM 2400MHz sitting around, can I repurpose it for a new Framework config (and spare the corresponding 180€)?
Intel Core Ultra only supports DDR5 unfortunately. 13th gen is the last generation that supported DDR4 (14th on desktop).
Thank you for the answer!
The limited range of compatibility of RAM components makes me wonder if the promise of upgradeability actually delivers
For those happy to do the tinkering, will you make the `super` key individually available, rather than needing to buy the full keyboard?
Does it support HDR/Dolby Vision?
The Surface Pro 8/9 that this seems to be based on says it supports Dolby Vision.
Will you offer some kind of (optional) case+adapter to make an older webcam usable as a usb-camera?
No questions, just thank you.
Any word on expected battery life this time around?
I saw the email with stating that the SD Card expansion slot was in stock and jumped to the marketplace, credit card in hand to make a purchase.
Unfortunately, the page still says give us your email for a notification. Theres no per-order option for just the expansion slot as of yet.
Please make it happen, that's the last thing really important thing I need with my laptop.
Thank you for this "last laptop I'll ever buy"
> and we’ll be launching in Sweden, Finland, and Denmark this June
As a Swede this is by far the most exciting part of the announcement!
How on earth did they announce an Ultra edition and not mention how the battery life is improved from other models?
>This is our fourth Framework Laptop 13 iteration with Intel processors, and we continue to optimize performance further each time. With Intel Core Ultra Series 1, Intel delivered major improvements in efficiency and battery life, especially on use cases like video playback.
We avoid providing specific numbers because battery life is massively dependent on workload and because we want to let press reviewers share their measured numbers.
You could counter that by setting up a few workflows and consistently measuring against that
I can pull 30 hours on 11th gen framework 13 idle with the screen on minimum brightness under windows 10 stripped down.
Thanks for making awesome stuff.
I was looking for specific numbers, not “major improvements”.
Reckon they’re going to get stiff competition from the arm surfaces
I doubt it. Framework’s core audience doesnt have all that much overlap with the Surface’s audience.
Looking forward to them releasing an arm-powered mainboard eventually. I have to assume it won't be price competitive though.
I suspect most of their target audience is willing to swallow the price issue for brand and modularity
How's the battery on this one? I'm hoping to upgrade from 11th gen intel i7. If possible, upgrading by just swapping the mainboard would be amazing.
It should be a pretty noticeable improvement if you're coming from 11th Gen. When we send out press units, you'll see reviewers doing comparison reviews across generations.
Looking forward to it, very happy customer!
Here is hope that they will add a motherboard with the new Qualcomm arm chips in the future. Although I can already see that the whole architecture may be too different to make it fit?
Really happy to see a higher refresh rate screen here, as an osu! player this will be immensely helpful. These types of things are what solidify my faith in why I got a Framework in the first place :)
Will there be a lunar lake model this fall? I’ll be shopping for sure then
Still, after all these years, no delivery to half of Europe.
So the 13 line will continue to get its own new upgrades, as opposed to being support only in wake of the 16. I'd never use such a small screen for a primary laptop but that's neat for people who do.
I want a laptop that has a standard keyboard with swappable keys. Granted it's sort of a desktop or large chunky thing at that point, but the idea of chic keys infuriates me to no end.
