This was a long but worthwhile read. Great insight into both the state of aviation in the early 1980s and the cold war geopolitical climate.

Very long but well written account of facts and commentary.

The summary section describing the cold war environment of distrust ... which made each side assume the worst from the other side ... felt like a mirror of today's political polarization in various parts of the world. Where benefit of doubt is rarely given to the other side.

All the recent GPS blocking/scrambling reminds me of this story. It almost seems like an intensional way to get airplanes to fly over more hostile areas in the Middle East.

Never ascribe to malevolence what can adequately be explained by incompetence.
