Ask HN: Did you relate the Mind is Flat book to LLMs?

2 points by dataexp 2 years ago · 1 comment · 1 min read

While reading the prologue of the book the mind is flat by Nick Chater published in 2018, the description is very similar to how a LLM works, that is it creates or predicts the next word without deep concepts about what is the structure of the future. Is an amazing analogy.

Edited: Excerpt from that book, at the botton of page 8: When we begin to describe our feelings, or explain our actions, we are only creating stories, one step at a time, not exploring a pre-existing inner world of thoughts and feelings.

So the similarities between LLMs and our minds are enhanced.

I got a whole bunch of inner world that goes into describing anything in my head. The bottleneck is the medium. I can't just think to you my thought and it's surrounding contexts and memories and reasons.
