Would you pay to buy a programming language? How much would you pay?

I personally paid for Fortran compilers from Absoft, Lahey, Microsoft, NA Software, Imagine1 (for the F subset of Fortran), Digital, and Compaq in the past. The former two are no longer sold, and Compaq Visual Fortran became Intel Fortran, which is now free. I would be open to paying for a compiler if it is better than free offerings.

I have in the distant past. I am so grateful I don’t have to anymore. Even the embedded space seems to have mostly ditched for-pay IDEs and compilers.

I'm wondering is there any users of the Wolfram language, it it worth the price?

What does "programming language" mean? A compiler?

  • somewhoOP 2 years ago

It means a programming language that is better designed and works better than most of today's programming languages, to start. Think better than C and Golang, simpler than Python.

It also means a compiler. A language with better toolchain and better development experience.

It doesn't mean an IDE, at this stage. An IDE might be as much work as the language. Although integrating with an IDE can improve the debugging experience.

What would your dream programming language look like?

I think the problem is that you would have to elaborate on what "better than C" means. And python is pretty simple, although I must admit I don't like white space being significant.

In just this one post, you used the word "better" a lot. But how would it be better?

I already really like C. And c++. And python. And javascript. And several others.

My question, then, would be what do you think you can offer that they don't already address?

Granted, I may not be your target audience. But I, as someone who is also currently designing a programming language, am curious as to what your thoughts are for your language.

10 usd/month or something

Wouldn't you prefer to pay for the language once and not have to pay for it again? I would, but everyone's different.
