I just signed up for Polar and am confused.

I was under the impression, maybe wrongly, that this was a kickstarter-like service but for software.

Now after logging in, if I’m understanding correctly, it seems to be a paid newsletter platform (like Substack).

Can someone explain.

Because I’m very confused after signup.

It looks like a combination between Substack and Patreon, but targeting a different niche - specifically programmers and people in the tech industry. I can't really see what's that different from each of those platforms, other than, say, having better integration with GitHub.

I'll be curious to see how vertical specific platforms will compete/coexist with more general platforms like Patreon. I wonder if eventually we'll see something like The Match Group emerge...

5% (plus Stripe feeds) for the platform means it will only work for really small projects. Arguably, the majority.

At first glance, I thought this was about polar.rs and I was quite intrigued. Either way, congrats on landing him. Mitchell is great.

To the Polar.sh team, congrats on landing mitchellh as an advisor! Perhaps he might go on to expand his involvement with Polar, similar to how Brian Acton increased his involvement with Signal Foundation after a hefty donation? Time will tell.

It's funny because I just learned of Polar yesterday and would be curious to hear from the Polar founders how they differ significantly from Algora [1] apart from the obvious difference in take rate.
