I play the devil's advocate on this issue. Cell phones are emblematic of social connectedness. How could a socialite survive without one? It's so intuitive that it's cargo-cultish; the younger you get a cellphone, the more you superficially resemble a socialite.

Totally agree on that, at best they should have a phone that just does calls and sms to inform their parents. No need for anything else.
