Ask HN: How to name an OSS project extracted from a closed-source product?
We will be open-sourcing the core of our platform in April, currently in the process of pulling it out of our codebase.
We already have a CLI for our customers; we were planning to use that as our open-source version.
I see some open-source projects by for-profit companies that use different names (AuthZed v. SpiceDB), but then there are companies/projects like Mongo, Terraform, and Redhat.
Are you less likely to use an open-source tool if it shares branding with a for-profit company?
We're also planning to submit our spec to the CNCF. Does that impact your opinion?
Are we overthinking this? Is anyone concerned about this?
