Ask HN: An AI to measure feet using a photo?

3 points by mariusbolik 2 years ago · 7 comments · 1 min read

I am a passionate user of AI, but am new to developing it. There are now tons of ingenious AI tools that make your life easier. So I wanted to ask for a few tips and tricks on how I can put my plans into practice!

I'm planning to develop an AI that can determine the exact dimensions of a foot based on a picture of it. To do this, the foot is to be positioned on a sheet of paper in order to determine the size of the foot based on its standardized measurements and to recommend a suitable shoe size.

So an AI is needed that can recognize objects and create a coordinate system based on the sheet of paper to determine the size of the foot.

Are there any similar projects that can be used? And what should I generally bear in mind during development and how do I proceed?

Thank you very much for your attention!

This is exactly what StrutFit does: https://www.strut.fit/product

Live demo (click "What is my Vivobarefoot size? "): https://www.vivobarefoot.com/uk/primus-lite-iii-mens-ss22

Strut says they use AI, but that might just be marketing talk.

You just need some optical image detection and basic math.

You don't need an AI for that. Look up opencv.

Thank you for your feedback. Due to a patent, it is not permitted to use image recognition algorithms for this case.

Using an model that was trained with random data with different licences is in my opinion more legal dangerous than an library that represents the current status of image processing and you can't patent the current state of the art.

And a statistical model that does the same, but in worse, is not? Opencv does not exist since yesterday.
