Ask HN: I firmly believe that AI is the next big wave of tech, where do I start?
I timed the native app wave perfectly and have made a great living and career from doing iOS development and eng management at lots of big-name companies.
Now that the true next wave is here in AI (I never believed it was blockchain and crypto ), I’m left wondering what I should be doing to get involved and be a part of it. I want to be on the forefront of tech and mobile apps just ain’t that anymore.
It seems like AI requires such a new and different way of thinking that I don’t even know how much of my skillset could translate. I guess devs need managers but I want to get into the weeds of this new wave. Where should I start? AI Scientist here. Learn about LLMs .. the tools are starting to get there .. it looks like API calls. Super easy to get into. Check out ChatGPT's APIs to start. I am getting some second thoughts about applications that will truly stick and generate value (ala iphone). My gut says same as yours but I have some skepticism as I can see the problems with the tech preventing the hockey stick. Do you believe LLMs are AI? I don't. It's just a very simple algo... not saying that they aren't great though. Yeaa. The YouTube video where andrej karpathi setup chatgpt from the scratch. Lookworthy.
It's just an algo. The work and money is in the optimisation of all parts around it. Mostly the text classification, storage and of course computing. So, still, respect to the guys on all levels. If you believe in the wave, just think of a killer app. What would be the killer app for generative AI?
