Ask HN: Advice for a tech / software / data science trainee?
I am (finally) starting a new Data Science course this week. For context, I have two decades of experience in marketing and sales in IT and SaaS companies but I have never coded (except a couple of hello world programs). After being laid off and some self-reflection, I decided to move careers to data science and analytics -- so I will learn Python, Tableau, and SQL for the next 6-7 months.
I visit HN at least 2-3 times a day even though I am not a hacker. So, I turn to all tech experts at HN: Is there anything you would like to advise me on or share your experience:
- how to learn tech effectively and if possible quickly?
- tips related to research, problem-solving, etc.
- how to overcome self-doubts and related issues (from folks who have switched careers in 40s)?
- how to approach the job market (would you hire someone who has worked in business roles but is new to data science or python?)?
- any project work I can take upon to build a portfolio?
- overcoming internal distractions.
PS: Education-wise, I have a STEM post-grad degree from Asia but started my career in digital media. I love reading about tech, science, economics, etc.
I thank you in advance for your guidance and help.
