What "Behind-the-Scenes" technologies are you most excited about?

My ears always perk up when I hear about some interesting technologies. For example, I'm fascinated by real-time facial action analysis, DNA digital data storage, nuclear phone batteries, SS7, brain-computer interfaces, power analysis, and so on. These technologies may not make the headlines as often as artificial intelligence, but I still think they are very interesting.

I'm curious to hear from you: What are some technologies that you find most exciting or intriguing? What is it about these technologies that captures your attention?
