Show HN: Simple tool to hang your art at museum height
museumheight.comI recently found out about a concept called 'Museum Height' for hanging art, where the center-line of a piece or a group of pieces is at 57 inches (144cm), which is average eye level. I love the effect, but I hate doing all the measurement and math to make sure that I'm putting the nail at the right height. This made it so I'd always delay hanging art on my walls.
I started with a spreadsheet and some formulas, but kept feeling the itch to make an app. Welp, here it is! It's super simple, and I wrote it as a literal single html page app with jquery out of nostalgia for simpler times. The code is awful, but it was fun to write and unlike a lot of modern frameworks I think this page will work even as the sun consumes the earth. Bonus: All state is stored in the URL so you can send others your measurements easily.

I have a lot of art that I recently framed and have been waiting to hang up. I rent, so I can't use nails, but this should still work with the paint-safe command strips we have Take this with a grain of salt (I'm no pro) but my only issues with it are: - The span wrapping the "Distance from the top of the art to the stretched wire" hover state could maybe use a fixed width. I played around and 100px seemed wide enough for easier reading - maybe you'd use a different measurement than px though - Maybe have that L+W display outside of the box vs inside for smaller frames like 10x10. It may look better - right now it looks a little busy Yeah I didn't want to use a library for tooltips and at that point in the project my enthusiasm was starting to flag a bit :) Good point about measurements outside... lemme see how it looks. Seems like it could be useful for handymen and other folks who hang art professionally Put up a picture rail I have no idea what that is and I refuse to find out it's a strip of moulded timber that you fix at the top of your wall, say a foot down, and then using a picture hook you can hang whatever pictures you like and replace them as many times as you like without doing any more drilling https://i.pinimg.com/originals/cc/9b/33/cc9b33d99a962a0830ad...
