Welcome to the New GamersNexus Website v5.0: A Message
gamersnexus.netAs always, they boast a lot how they are good.
I heard the message.
> The new "5.0" version of the GamersNexus website is now live, ad-free, and function-focused.
Here all the trackers that Privacy Badger blocked: googleads.g.doubleclick.net static.doubleclick.net play.google.com www.google.com www.googletagmanager.com fonts.gstatic.com cdn.jsdelivr.net o23210.ingest.sentry.io
Edit: oh god, it's a drupal website.
That may be because they have a Youtube video embedded in the post. All those scripts are Google related. Tag Manager is likely theirs however, for loading Google Analytics.
i would say the same about wordpress and joomla, unless it's statically generated it'll suck. The issue is regular people should be able to administer the site and add content to it. So drupal seems like a reasonable choice.
with regards to other things mentioned - youtube-nocookie should have been used but other than that i don't see a problem?
edit: drupal 10 is already out and they are still using 9 and not even 9.5
> The issue is regular people should be able to administer the site and add content to it
Why not markdown + static site generator?
markdown makes sense for things like documentation, but with these sites like gamersnexus i think there are some issues
1) how do you migrate all the existing content from joomla (which they do want to migrate) - would it be in some terrible html only format? would it be a mix of html and markdown?
2) how do want to use markdown for articles like https://gamersnexus.net/features/inside-collapse-artesian-bu... ? it would be highly customized markdown anyway, and the more markdown additions are, the less markdown makes sense anyways since portability becomes an issue
I think their current approach is fine - render once and cache is pretty normal. With that being said less is more and I hope they did not implement a lot of plugins or custom code that would require maintenance every other php/drupal upgrade.
What I would like to see instead is using svg graphs with high accessibility instead of just pictures.
What's wrong with Drupal?
It recall me bad memories when I tried to maintain a drupal website, it was hell, it's a dedicated job.
That still doesn't explain what's wrong with it.
when it was? 20 years ago?
About 4-5 years ago ?
Last three are not trackers: Google Fonts, JS CDN and Error handling.
Google Fonts leaks your IP to google, it's also not GDPR complient.
JS CDN leaks your IP to a third party, they already have a CDN: cloudflare.
Saying sentry.io is just "error handling" is wrong, it's a monitoring suite.
That's a pretty tortured definition of tracking. Your IP gets leaked when using any third party service.
There is no evidence that any of those listed use your IP for advertising purposes.
A tracker doesn't mean it's for advertising purpose.
Summary: The website will relaunch with detailed hardware reviews ad-free.
It is fast indeed, no cookie wall either.
Odd how at 36 points in 2 hours this isn't on the front page and has been bumped down to 2nd page
whats does that imply to you? im not too knowledgeable on the system but you got me curious lol.
I was merely expressing that the mods demoted the post.
Am I the only one that has to scroll down to find the article? Also the navbar has 2 lines at 1366. :/
Hope it's not a shitty squarespace website .
It's a drupal website.
Thanks, not sure why they were incessantly advertising squarespace for the past few years.
Because Squarespace sponsors almost every Youtuber and apparently pay quite well.
I guess this is what they are doing with all YouTube drama revenue they generated earlier this year?
They didn't monetize any of those videos, nor did they include "silly" jokes about their stores thinking it was a good idea, nor did they make "silly" sex jokes.
I assume they monetized everything after it though (yes obviously they did). You can turn off monetization on a video and still benefit from drama.
They didn't generate anything, but they did capitalize on the self inflicted LMG drama
how is that self inflicting? dude made a hour long video intentionally trying to start drama and get views lol. if he sent an email there would be no drama its definitely not self inflicted. but hey i mean drama was the main point. good for him hes good at what he does
anyone got a tldr of drama?
LMG made a series of videos with significant errors that weren't corrected showing a sloppy work ethic. There seems to be a lot of workplace pressure and overwork. The main issue however was that they auctioned off a prototype GPU waterblock from a small company that had loaned them it to test after agreeing to send it back. LMG completely butcher the review putting it on the wrong GPU model and then slammed the product when it didn't work and GamersNexus reported on it all. In response Linus wrote a horrendous forum post failing to acknowledge they did wrong containing a bunch of statements that within days were determined to be not true. Ultimately they ended up a few days later with all the senior staff in a video explaining how they would fix their culture and they froze making videos for a while.
The GN first video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGW3TPytTjc&pp=ygURR2FtZXJzT...
and the follow up on Linus' forum post https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3byz3txpso&pp=ygURR2FtZXJzT...
LMG's "apology" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cTpTMl8kFY&t=1s&pp=ygUXbGlu...
There is also a sexual assault claim as well from an ex employee, its not surprisingly now being handled by lawyers and we haven't I think heard of a resolution to that.
> that had loaned them it to test
No they gave it to LMG to test, then asked for it back which is the source of the miscommunication
From vague memory; he did something dumb and doubled down on it?
